The SG Sound & Doug Ferony

Some cool tracks for your saturday night, hope you're not as snowed in as I am!

Doug Ferony with "My Way", you know, I find it odd there aren't more versions of this song around, perhaps I'm not looking in the right places?

The SG Sound with "The Cantina Band", if you're a "Star Wars" fan, you'll probably love this spacey, retro sounding tune! (You've got to get their album, The SG Sound is nothing short of amazing and an internet stream just doesn't compare to the full quality tracks)

A couple mellow tunes from "The Alan Copeland Singers" and "Keely Smith", and a fun, vocal jazz tune from Johnny Mann.

Enjoy! (By the way, we'd really like to hear your plans for the new year, phone them in!)

Some more holiday tracks, including Enoch Light

Well, it's snowing.. and snowing.. and snowing.. and snowing! up here in Minnesota, good weather to stay inside, it seems so pointless to shovel when it'll be covered up in 2 hours anyway.

A note to the people using stream rippers: I admire your effort and I am honored, however, I can't officially condone the practice, I ask that if you're going to do it, at least use a stream ripper that ties up only one connection and hides itself from us a little better.

The problem is that some rippers use extra connections, this wastes bandwidth on both sides, costing everyone money.

Personally, I don't have a problem with someone ripping into hour long mp3 files for later play on their iPod or something, I wish the law allowed us to deliver podcasts, lifting individual tracks is silly though, the quality just isn't the same as napster or amazon. Internet radio is simply not an mp3 delivery service.

Anyhow, on with todays tracks!

You may have noticed we squeezed the Theme from MASH in yesterday, this was a simple oversight, it's an awesome version done by Enoch Light, I can't believe I forgot to mention it!

Also Anita Kerr, Kay Starr, Billy May and some more from Percy Faith. Hope your holiday season went well! (and that you don't have too many decorations to take down..)

New Tracks

  • Enoch Light - Theme from MASH
  • Johnny Mann/Simon Zenther - It's a Lonesome Old Town
  • Kay Starr - I Love Paris
  • Anita Kerr - Strangers In The Night
  • Percy Faith - Sunny
  • Billy May - Old Fashioned Girl

Happy Holidays from the triviacompanion!

Hope your holiday season is going along smoothly, watch out for those Christmas cocktails!

Well, it's snowing up here in the great frosty land known as Minnesota, nice cozy fire is burning and we're bringing you some more tracks.

A lot of choral tracks this time!

First is Johnny Mann with Simon Zenther, their "Serenade in Blue" has a nice choral big band sound.

On the choral theme is Anita Kerr with "Remember When", I'm sure you'll agree they sound absolutely fabulous!

Joni James sings about how much we'll miss her "After You've Gone".

Billy May with "Rich Butterfly", a nice hopping jazz tune.

Percy Faith with "Brand New Morning", be very careful with this song, as it tends to get stuck in your head.

And finally, Serge Gainsbourg with "Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin" and if you can't speak French, you're not alone.. I can't either! but he does have a nice sound, I'm sure you'll agree. (I wonder what the words mean!)

Esquivel, Quincy Jones and More

It's weird how 20 degree weather can seem almost tropical when you've spent time in -10 weather isn't it?

Some more from Elmer Bernstein with "Finale", it's the kind of tune you hear and think, I know I've heard this some place, but where?

Quincy Jones with "Enchanted Melody", a nice tune to mellow out with.

Some space age bachelor pad music from Esquivel, "Johnson Rag"

Doug Ferony with "Almost Like Being in Love", you know, I really wish I had the voice of Doug Ferony, but then, I imagine every guy out there does!

Finally, to get in the holiday spirit, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" from Mark Anderson, some christmas music done on an organ. This one isn't so much added to the playlist, we just play it now and then. (Believe it or not, triviacompanion isn't entirely robot driven, sometimes there's an actual person there)

  • Doug Ferony - Almost Like Being in Love

Serge Gainsbourg & Syd Dale

We're coming up on the shortest day of the year, the Minnesota sky is turning dark a lot earlier now, good news, more night time is always a good thing! (Just wish it happened in the summer, so we could go out and enjoy it more)

More from Billy May, with "Perdido", a nice big-band retro sound.

The Headliners do an interesting version of Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs" and on the mellow track is some more from the Syd Dale Orchestra with "Reminiscing" a track that you'll recognize almost instantly if you listened to AM radio in the 70's.

A couple tracks from Serge Gainsbourg, "Ce Mortel Ennui" and "L'alcool", if you can't speak French, well, you're in good company, neither can I! (and if you can speak French and hear something that isn't "work safe".. please tell me)

  • Serge Gainsbourg - Ce Mortel Ennui
  • The Headliners - I Write The Songs
  • Syd Dale Orchestra - Reminiscing

Billy May, Quincy Jones big band sound

Hope your weekend is going well, here are some more track updates to put a little warmth into your winter.

Terry Gibbs plays the vibes with "Joshua"

Billy May & His Orchestra

Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley with a nice, mellow version of Call Me

Some more groovy big band style music, Quincy Jones and "Cain's Hundreds"

We'd like to know what you think of 56k streams -vs- 128k or 64k, do you listen in an environment where bandwidth is expensive? When I listen to 128k streams, it sounds nicer but there are more network problems. We're considering moving to either 64k or 128k, it should sound slightly better but it could create network hassles. We'd like to know your opinions.

New Tracks

  • Billy May & His Orchestra - I Believe In You
  • Terry Gibbs - Joshua
  • Quincy Jones - Cain's Hundreds
  • Astrud Gilberto & Walter Wanderley - Call Me

Buddy Lester interviews Bob Newhart and George Burns, you'll want to hear their favorite jokes.

Lena Horne, Piero Umiliani & more

An awesome track from Piero Umiliani, (one of the nice things about a blog in written form is that I don't have to pronounce that!) "Toccata e Samba", I must warn you, it is a highly addictive track, we've been playing it here "in studio" as it were, over and over. Figured it was about time to share it with you!

Also some more from the SG Sound, a 60's retro-pop sound with "The Pleasure Center".

Finally, Lena Horne with "It Had Better Be Tonight".

Astrud Gilberto & Walter Wanderley

From high atop the iceberg of the mid-west, TriviaCompanion brings you some music sure to transform your shiver into a dance.

Mary Rademacher sings "Zippity Do Dah", in that classic standards kind of way.

A bit of bachelor pad music from Nelson Riddle with "Live and Let Live", which kind of reminds me of walking down a sidewalk on leave it to beaver, if it were some-how possible to jump back in time and do that sort of thing.

A fun, mellow, vocal-free version of "The Girl From Ipanema" done by the Golden Saxophones, I don't know why, but I was never terribly fond of the song, but it does sound good without lyrics.

Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderly team up to bring you "Portuguese Washerwoman", I don't think I've ever heard anyone that can match Astrud Gilberto's voice, she is truly one of a kind.

New Music

  • Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra - Live And Let Live

  • The Golden Saxophones - The Girl From Ipanema

New Tracks

  • Mary Rademacher - I'm Beginning to see the Light
  • Enoch Light - Mas Que Nada
  • The Golden Saxophones - Calcutta
  • Lionel Hampton - Blackout
